KEY TAKE OUTS:
- Almost 30 criminals have not been monitored due to the GPA tracking company closing unexpectedly.
- BailSafe Australia shut down without informing authorities which left accused criminals unmonitored and compromising public safety.
- A Bail Fail.
BailSafe Australia, an independent GPS monitoring service provider for offenders on bail, reportedly shut its doors more than two weeks ago without notifying Victoria Police or the NSW Department of Justice.
The implications of this have left police, justice authorities and courts across NSW and Victoria scrambling to locate alleged offenders on bail who are now unaccounted for. More than 20 defendants on bail in NSW were found to be wearing BailSafe ankle monitors and therefore, were unmonitored.
Ankle monitoring is typically reserved for high risk offenders accused of serious crimes who are required to be continually tracked to protect victims.
Alarms were raised when the Law Society of NSW informed its members that BailSafe “may have ceased operations without notice to the court, nor the accused persons currently being monitored by its devices”.
As authorities work to address the immediate concerns, this incident is likely to prompt a broader review of bail monitoring practices and the role of private firms in the justice system.
