Beware of Double Demerits!

BEWARE OF DOUBLE DEMERITS!

  • Starting at 12:00am on Wednesday 21st September 2022 and finishing at 11:59pm on Sunday 25th September 2022.
  • Please ensure you abide by all road rules to ensure of the safety of yourself and others and also to prevent the possibility of losing your license

Drivers are being urged to ensure they take extra care on the road during the public holiday period.

Following the Prime Minister Mr Anthony Albanese declaring Thursday the 22nd of September to be the National Day of Mourning for Her Majesty the Queen and a public holiday, commencing at 12:00am on Wednesday the 21st of September 2022 and finishing at 11:59pm on Sunday 25th of September 2022, double demerits will be in force.

The five-day double demerit period has been enacted to account for the expected additional road users surrounding the National Day of Mourning and is further extended to account for the start of the school holiday period.

The double demerit penalty will apply to all speeding offences, not wearing your seatbelt, illegal mobile phone use and motorcycle helmet offences.

As Mobile Phone Detection Cameras are active in New South Wales, if you are found to have illegally used your mobile phone during a double demerit period, you could face a $352 fine and up to 10 demerit points deducted from your licence.

Drivers caught speeding between 10-20km/hr over the legal limit may receive a deduction of six demerit points and a $288 fine.

Whilst if you are found to be speeding 45km/hr over the speed limit, you could see your demerit points reduced by 12 points.

It is also important to be aware that school zones will still be in place from Wednesday 21st of September to Friday 23rd of September. Drivers are reminded to abide by the displayed road rules and are warned that additional penalties may apply to certain offences that are committed within school zones.
